However, today, I'm not here to preach about any new method that I've discovered or rave about any new theory that I'd like to evangelize. As the humble servants of our clients, all we do is to be on the constant lookout for the 'edge', from which we can push the frontiers of application of newly emerging social media tools. The aim: to bring value for everyone involved, from our clients, to our partners and our employees, our Communities.

At The Pacific West Communications, we look to employ the latest tools developed by the Web 2.0 community to connect better with the various communities that we have been mandated to reach out to by our clients. As an agency, we pride ourselves in our proactive approach to community relations and continually tinker around with the latest tools available. Before we elaborate further, I must first thank our clients for their understanding and equal willingness to experiment along with us. Without their forward-thinking, we would not have the opportunities to push the cutting edge.

Client Brief
In early May, our agency organized a launch event for our client ChainFusion who have created BuyButtonz.com. BuyButtonz is a new, secure online payment system that allows anyone to sell online. As part of our brief, we were tasked with organizing a launch event to create awareness amongst the media and consumers . Our concept for the launch event was to create the first ever eCommerce and Bloggers Fair where online sellers (eCommerce stores and blog sellers) could all get together for an afternoon of selling at a local mall. The target market for BuyButtonz was online merchants and to emphasize the community orientation that BuyButtonz wanted in its efforts to reach out to the sellers, BuyButtonz generously sponsored the fair. Online sellers were sponsored to gather at the Far East Plaza Mall on May 6 2007 to network and sell together. The idea was to bring the online selling community together so that the sellers themselves could reach out to their own communities of sellers. As a city, Singapore is easily accessible and the purpose of the fair was also to foster deeper community interaction.

Events have traditionally been organized with little interaction with the web. The conventional thinking of many event organizers would be to focus on executing an impressive event that would target only the people who could attend physically. Why bother with the hassle of reaching out beyond the boundaries of traditional comfort zones? Co-opting radio for an event would most likely be the medium of choice for most organizers -- the reach of radio is impressive and the ability to report live from an event helps to lend the event an element of buzz. However, as a medium, radio is still one-way and does not foster a conversation at all. It's great for the 1.0 world but could there be a better alternative for the 2.0 world? Especially for today's budget conscious clients who continually seek to maximize their budgets?

Welcome to the two-way world of social media, where the consumers expect to get the news raw and demand the right to reply. The world has changed and this is the reality of the online world now. The blogging community in Singapore is strong, potentially vociferous, and their demand to consume new media experiences has never been higher.

Admittedly, online video streaming is not a new technology. However, the costs of executing live video streaming from public locations has traditionally been prohibitive, possibly preventing more event organizers from taking advantage of video streaming's communicative abilities. But now, with bandwidth costs dropping sharply and broadband available wirelessly throughout nearly the entire Singapore, the enabling technologies for cost-effective live video streaming has finally arrived!

Streaming Live, The Benefits
For the BuyButtonz's event, we opted to utilize the streaming technology provided by California based Ustream.tv. Ustream.tv is a two-month old start-up that allows users to immediately stream content from their web-cams onto the Internet through the web-browser. Just by having the Adobe Flash plug-in on your browser and a web-cam hooked up to your computer, you can now stream live video onto the Internet. Ustream.tv also provides you with an easily embeddable code (just like Youtube's code) that makes it easy for bloggers to include your live video feed onto their blogs.

With the technology infrastructure in place, all we needed was a partner who could help us distribute the video feed. We chose Ping.sg, Singapore's fastest emerging meta-blogging community. Ping.sg is a blog aggregator that uses a proprietary algorithm to rank the posts created by bloggers. Based on various factors such as click-throughs and votes to a post, popular posts are identified and promoted to the top of the posts. Launched in late 2006, Ping.sg has enjoyed significant growth and developed a sticky community of bloggers.

The founder of Ping.sg was highly supportive of our idea to stream this event live onto his site. Without hesitation, he agreed to do so probably because he could see the benefits such a live streaming of content would have to allow his community to rally around an online event of interest that was fed instantly from a live event.

On the day of the event, Ping.sg kindly embedded a video feed of the event on a prominent location (above the line) of its homepage. This ensured instant visibility for visitors who logged onto the site that day. The embedded video feed was coincidentally placed next to the shoutbox on the left column of the page. The shoutbox is a live chat box for the Ping.sg community and this created the basis for an extremely social video streaming session.

Our crew then hooked up a web-cam to a Wifi-enabled laptop that was logged into Ustream.tv's broadcasting page. Since the atrium of Far East Plaza was adequately covered by our wifi setup, the crew managed to roam the fair at frequent intervals capturing stall owners and on-site activities.

Besides simply streaming the video onto Ping.sg, our crew made use of the shoutbox to provide a live commentary of the stalls available at the fair many bloggers posted onto their own blogs from the event which in turn become viewable at the ping.sg site. The response we gathered from the community logged into Ping.sg was positive and high energy. Many watched the stream live for hours. The founder of Ping.sg also called for a meet-up of his community at the fair and this must have attracted many of the community members to come together. In the earlier part of the day, many members tuned into the live feed to interact with their fellow friends at the fair and in the later part of the day, more of them left their computers to attend the fair in person.

The Buzz
In this instance we were able to provide for our client an unprecedented buzz at their launch event. The mere use of a new Web 2.0 technology that managed successfully through visual means to bring together our client with the on-site attendees and the online world of bloggers and some traditional media is truly a demonstration of where public relations is going to venture more in the not to distant future. A new client is allowing us to push even further in our public relations drive into the Digital Frontier. As I write this editorial our first in-world media event in Second Life is being planned for execution over the coming months.
